Center for Tissue and Cell Sciences

Leadership

Mark W. Majesky, PhD, and Michael L. Cunningham, MD, PhD

Joint Acting Directors

Meet the Center for Tissue and Cell Sciences members.

Our Vision

Healing children through innovation and discovery. We will restore children's health after injury through repair, regeneration or replacement of tissues, cells and organs.

The Center

By understanding the body's response at the molecular, cellular, tissue and whole-organ levels, researchers at the Center for Tissue and Cell Sciences are developing innovative therapeutic interventions that will ultimately help the body repair itself. The knowledge gained from the center's investigations is applied toward finding ways to heal damage caused by childhood developmental abnormalities and acquired illnesses, such as chronic kidney disease, heart disease, asthma and craniofacial malformations.

Mark Majesky

Mark Majesky, PhD (email), an expert in stem cell biology, recently joined Seattle Children's Research Institute from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as joint acting director of the Center for Tissue and Cell Sciences and director of the Myocardial Regeneration Initiative. Majesky also leads the stem cell research efforts for the Seattle Children's Heart Center, where his work will benefit the heart failure program. He will be working with colleagues at the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine (ISCRM) at the University of Washington's South Lake Union Campus, with an aim to develop cellular approaches to regenerate the heart and coronary vessels without invasive surgery or transplant.

Learn more about Majesky's work at his lab page. He is also profiled in this article from the March 2010 issue of Interaction Research News, the research institute's monthly newsletter.

Center Research Areas

The center's research spans the following areas:

  • Tissue inflammation and fibrosis. Molecular regulation of tissue responses to illness or trauma.
  • Stem cell biology and regenerative medicine. Tissue engineering and cellular reprogramming.
  • Developmental biology. Origin and repair of developmental abnormalities and solid organ transplantation.

To learn more about becoming a member of this center, interested faculty and postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to contact Dr. Mark Majesky at 206-884-3661.
