- Description of Research:
-
Childhood obesity is becoming an increasing problem in both prevalence and severity. No study has ever demonstrated an approach that leads to sustained improvement in the health of overweight/obese adolescents. I am in the process of facilitating the development of an interdisciplinary program for 12-17 year old adolescents whose BMI is at the 95percent or greater.
This program will include the disciplines of nutrition, medicine, behavioral health, nursing, and fitness, and will include both individual assessments and interventions plus group experiences in fitness and in education about aspects of this problem. In addition, it will include follow-up for a substantial period of time, perhaps indefinitely. We will be measuring improvements in physicial health (e.g., stamina, flexibility, blood lipids, BMI) as well as mental health (e.g., quality of life issues, depression, anxiety).
