Research and Family Liaisons

Foundation of Research

Research is the foundation of Seattle Children’s mission to prevent, treat and eliminate pediatric disease. We are dedicated to conducting research that advances pediatric medical care and treatments using the highest possible ethical standards. This is especially important when research involves child participants.

At Seattle Children’s Hospital Research Institute, our goal is to bring family-centered care into the research arena by promoting understanding and fully involving families throughout the research process.

"Family-centered care is at the heart of what we try to accomplish. This can mean helping families get information they need to make a decision or just listening to them."

Zuraya Aziz, research and family liaison

Research and family liaisons (RFLs) are a resource for families considering participating in a research study. RFLs work with families and research teams throughout the hospital to encourage clear communication, provide information about the research process and assist families in making a decision about participating in a research study.

RFLs help families:

  • Ask questions about the study
  • Understand the study information provided
  • Gather information about the study
  • Explore other options to participating in the study
  • Determine how study participation will impact their family life
  • Remember their participation in the study is voluntary
  • Determine a course of action if they choose to stop participating

In an effort to better understand the family experience in research, RFLs conduct focus groups and interviews. The information they gather is used to improve the way research teams present study information to families, help design studies that meet families' needs and train research faculty and staff to work better with families.

If you are interested in RFL support at your next visit, please ask a member of your care or research team to contact an RFL, or you may contact one directly:
