Our hospital educators are Washington state-certified teachers. They are available to our patients through a contract between Children's Hospital and Washington state's Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Our teachers are available at no cost to patient or family. They work closely with medical teams. They examine the impact of illness or injury on a patient's ability to do different types of school activities and assignments.
Six full and part-time teachers provide educational services to patients in Children's medical/surgical, rehabilitation and child psychiatry units. Four full-time instructional assistants offer support.
We also have an early childhood education program. It identifies infants and toddlers who might benefit from early intervention services.
All services are coordinated with existing school programs. They are consistent with the needs of students in general and special education programs.
A large classroom is available for patients who can participate in small and large group instruction. We also serve students on their medical units or at bedside if they are unable to leave their room for extended periods.
Our hospital teachers have certification in a variety of educational areas to meet the unique needs of patients.
