Jairam Lingappa, MD, PhD: Associate Director, International Clinical Research Center (ICRC); Associate Professor of Global Health and Medicine; Adjunct Associate Professor of Pediatrics; Co-Director of CFAR Repository.
Dr. Lingappa’s research focuses on using clinical research studies to better understand host defense factors in infectious diseases. From 2004 to 2009, he was the medical director and co-investigator of a large multi-site clinical trial in Africa, evaluating suppression of genital herpes (HSV-2) to reduce HIV transmission in HIV serodiscordant heterosexual couples. Currently, he is a co-investigator on a second large multi-site clinical trial of pre-exposure antiretroviral prophylaxis to reduce HIV transmission. Epidemiologic data and clinical specimens from these and other clinical studies are stored in the UW Department of Global Health ICRC. Collaborating with specialty immunology and genomics labs at the UW and elsewhere, Dr. Lingappa is currently engaged in using these specimens and data to conduct translational scientific investigations into the role of host genomic and immunologic factors and viral co-infections on HIV and other infections.
