Jesús M. López-Guisa, PhD, is an affiliated Research Assistant Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He earned his PhD in biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Currently, Dr. López-Guisa is researching the mechanisms involved in the inflammatory and fibrotic processes of progressive renal diseases. Dr. López-Guisa is a member of several minority programs at the University of Washington as well as being a member of the American Association of Cancer Research and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Minority Network. He has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed publications.

Research Description: My research group is interested on the inflammatory fibrotic process that leads to End Stage Renal Disease. We have particular interest in understanding the role of cytokines; particularly we focus on the IL-6 family of genes. The genes in this family are involved in regulating many other genes in response to inflammation and fibrosis. Because they are ubiquitously express in many cell types, we use Cre-flox mice to compartmentalize the expression effect of these genes in this particular milieu. We are interested on transcription and micro-RNA regulation of these genes in response to injury.
