"I was initially attracted to nephrology before I ever attended medical school. Working as a nurse, I cared for a 12-year-old boy with kidney failure. We provided life-saving peritoneal dialysis, but at that time (the late 1970s) such therapy severely compromised a patient’s quality of life. I was thrilled when he received a successful kidney transplant, enabling him to come off dialysis and resume a more normal life. Even after all these years I am still excited when a child gets the special gift of a new kidney."

Dr. Coral Hanevold is an outstanding doctor. She recognizes that the parents and siblings are very much affected by the patient's illness. As a Social worker and mother of a child whose kidneys failed this aspect of Dr. Hanevold's professional care was very important and life-saving for my family. Seattle Children's gained a wonderful, caring and thorough doctor. I consider her a friend and keep in touch.
