Syringomyelia Treatment Options

Your child's treatment depends on what has caused syringomyelia to develop. Whenever possible, we correct the basic cause of the cyst.

It is common for children with a Chiari malformation to have syringomyelia. In these cases, we know your child needs surgery to repair the Chiari malformation. This surgery will provide more space in your child's head for the brain. It will allow for more normal flow of the cerebrospinal fluid that fills the cyst.

If your child has a syringomyelia caused by another condition, treatment may be:

  • Find the cause of the cyst (for example, a tumor) and treat it.
  • Drain the cyst.
