Parents magazine today placed Seattle Children’s Hospital among the nation’s top children’s hospitals for the fifth consecutive time. Children’s was ranked 13th overall, up two spots from the previous ranking, and was the only children’s hospital in the Pacific Northwest to make the list.

Children’s cancer program also received special recognition as one of the top five in the country. The results were announced as part of the magazine’s bi-annual survey to identify the nation’s “Best Children’s Hospitals.”

The results of the comprehensive survey will appear in the magazine’s February 2009 issue on newsstands nationwide January 13th. The survey calculated results according to criteria including survival rates, the number of complex procedures and intricate surgeries conducted, depth of research, efforts to reduce medical errors, and the quality and training of the doctors and nurses—as well as child-friendliness, support for families, and community involvement.

Parents magazine’s research team sent a comprehensive 250-question survey to 116 member hospitals of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI). More than seventy-five hospitals completed the survey. Parents’ medical advisory board then reviewed and evaluated the survey results.
