Children's Hospital Concludes Successful Seven-Year Capital and Story Campaign

Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center announced today the conclusion of its seven-year capital campaign, The Campaign for Children’s - Fulfilling the Promise, which raised $350 million, exceeding the initial goal of $300 million and making it the second largest campaign in state history.

Over 97,000 community members, corporations, employees and patient families contributed to the campaign to support Children’s vision to become the nation’s best pediatric hospital through a legacy of uncompensated care, excellent facilities and cutting-edge research. More than 700 people also submitted stories about their memories of Children’s through the hospital’s Story Project.

“Children’s legacy and vision could not be possible without the delicate balance of its amazing staff and the generous community,” said Melinda F. Gates, campaign chair. “Whether you donated money, volunteered with the Guild Association or shared your experience through the Story Project, I want to thank you for supporting the campaign and making an incredible investment in the future of our children.”

“We are blessed to have a caring community that has remained dedicated to our mission and the children in our region for over 100 years,” said Cilla Joondeph, chairman of Children’s Board of Trustees. “Thanks to this unyielding support, we exceeded our initial campaign goals and are well on our way to becoming the nation’s best children’s hospital.”

The campaign’s success was also driven by the Story Project, a historical archive of inspiring stories that allowed people to contribute by sharing their memories of and experiences at Children’s. While each story is unique and special - such as those from former patient David Larkin who overcame spinal meningitis in 1965 and grew up to become a nurse, and the beloved “Marv the Milkman”, they all illustrated the high quality and compassionate care provided at Children’s.

Jason Lewis wrote about his family’s experience at Children’s over the last year as 6-year-old Logan underwent treatment for neuroblastoma. “Eight months ago I did not know where Children’s Hospital was…I have been in Puyallup all of my life. Children’s Hospital is now our home away from home and the staff there makes us feel extremely welcome. There is no place in the world we would rather have treatment.”

Children’s also surpassed its goal of 1,200 planned gift notifications, receiving 1,221 bequest notifications, more than any other organization in the state of Washington. Planned gifts include bequests in wills or trusts, life income plans, beneficiary designations and other tax-wise gift arrangements. Among the notable legacy gifts was one from Dr. Judith Brownell who decided with her late husband Dale to leave their entire estate to the hospital in gratitude for the excellent care Dale received as a child.

Funds raised during the campaign will support these three areas:

- Uncompensated Care - Children’s continues a founding legacy to treat all children regardless of their family’s ability to pay. In fiscal year 2007, the hospital provided more than $65 million in uncompensated care, a 57% increase over 2006 due to the complexity of care needed for patients from low-income families. This number is expected to increase to $80 million in fiscal year 2008.

- Facilities - New facilities, such as the Janet Sinegal Patient Care Building and Melinda French Gates Ambulatory Care Building, will enable Children’s to continue providing the highest quality, family-centered care.

- Research - Campaign funds will help recruit the best doctors and researchers, and help develop promising new treatments and cures for diseases. Children’s has significantly increased its research facilities in downtown Seattle, which can ultimately support 1.4 million square feet of bench laboratory space.

“Without money raised through philanthropy, we couldn’t fulfill our promise to provide the best care for all the children in our region,” said Dr. Thomas Hansen, CEO of Children’s. “In addition to providing uncompensated care, the campaign allows us to invest in cutting-edge research to find new treatments and eventually eliminate pediatric diseases.”

The Children’s Hospital Guild Association - the largest in the nation with 7,000 members and 500 guilds - raised more than $64 million for the campaign and contributed more than 1.2 million volunteer hours through various projects and events.
