Doctor Believes Soy Increased Risk of Kawasaki Disease That Sickened Young Boy

For the Harts, soy used to be a staple in their house, thinking soy milk and soy beans were healthy options. But the Harts now believe their soy consumption might have played a role in putting their son, Ewan, in the hospital. Ewan’s pediatrician suspected Kawasaki Disease, an autoimmune disease that attacks the arteries supplying blood to the heart, and sent them to Seattle Children’s where the diagnosis was confirmed. Dr. Michael Portman at Seattle Children's found eating a lot of soy could be a trigger in a child who is already susceptible. "It turns out that the children who ate a substantial amount of soy had much higher risk for Kawasaki,” said Dr. Portman.
