La diabetes mellitus también recibe el nombre de “diabetes sacarina”. Si una persona sufre de diabetes, su cuerpo no utiliza la glucosa adecuadamente. La glucosa, un azúcar, es la principal fuente de energía del cuerpo. Los niveles de glucosa son controlados por una hormona denominada “insulina”, que es producida por el páncreas. En los diabéticos, el páncreas no fabrica suficiente insulina (diabetes tipo 1) o el cuerpo no logra responder en forma normal a la insulina que se fabrica (diabetes tipo 2). Si la diabetes no está controlada (o si la persona no sabe que padece de diabetes), es probable que la persona experimente ciertos problemas, como mayores deseos de orinar, sed insaciable y pérdida de peso inexplicable.
