( Insulin )

La insulina es una hormona que baja el nivel de glucosa (un tipo de azúcar) en sangre . La producen las células beta del páncreas y la liberan al torrente sanguíneo cuando aumenta la glucosa, como ocurre después de comer alimentos. La insulina ayuda a que la glucosa entre en las células del cuerpo para que se la utilice como fuente de energía o se la almacene para el futuro. Cuando una persona tiene diabetes, el páncreas no genera suficiente insulina o el cuerpo no es capaz de responder en forma normal a la insulina que se produce. Esto hace que aumente el nivel de glucosa en sangre.
