( Diabetes Mellitus )

La diabetes mellitus (que también se conoce como la "diabetes sacarina") es un trastorno que ocurre cuando el cuerpo no puede utilizar la glucosa (un tipo de azúcar) en forma normal. La glucosa es la fuente más importante de energía para las células del cuerpo. Una hormona llamada "insulina" controla los niveles de glucosa en la sangre. Esta hormona se produce en el páncreas. La insulina ayuda a que la glucosa entre en las células. Cuando una persona padece de diabetes, el páncreas no produce suficiente insulina ( diabetes tipo 1 ) o el cuerpo no es capaz de responder en forma normal a la insulina que se genera ( diabetes tipo 2 ). A causa de esta situación, aumentan los niveles de glucosa en sangre, lo que se manifiesta en síntomas como incremento de la orina, sed insaciable y pérdida de peso sin explicación.
