( Bronchoconstriction )

Las vías aéreas (los conductos que llevan el aire hacia el interior y el exterior de los pulmones) están rodeadas por un tipo de músculo denominado "músculo liso". En pacientes con asma, estos músculos suelen contraerse en reacción a determinados factores. Cuando esto ocurre, las vías aéreas se vuelven más estrechas, lo cual bloquea el flujo de aire y dificulta la respiración. Este estrechamiento de las vías aéreas se denomina "broncoconstricción". Junto con la inflamación de las vías aéreas, es responsable de la aparición de síntomas, tales como tos, resuello y falta de aire.
