The pancreas is a long, flat gland that lies in the abdomen behind the stomach. It produces enzymes that are released into the small intestine to help with digestion . It also contains clusters of cells called islets . The cells in these islets produce hormones such as insulin and glucagon, which help control the level of glucose (a type of sugar) in the blood .
