SIDS

Daniel D. Rubens

Dr. Daniel D. Rubens

Assistant professor, Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Seattle Children's Hospital and UW School of Medicine

Director of medical simulation, Seattle Children's Hospital.

Dr. Rubens helped develop SimBaby, the world's first infant simulator, used for training physicians to allow them to experience real time scenarios that mimic various symptoms and responses of actual patients. He is also researching the finding of a hearing deficit from inner ear damage, noted at birth in SIDS infants with newborn hearing tests, and its potential relationship to the later mechanism of death. His initial theory and findings led to international media interest and wide coverage. He is currently pursuing additional research on the inner ear and its ability to detect changing levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide and communicate with the nervous system to inform correct breathing, exploring further implications for SIDS.

Medical School: University of New South Wales, UK

Residency: Liverpool Hospital, UK, including rotations to Prince of Wales and Saint Vincent's Hospitals; Westmead Hospital, Sydney, Australia
