Places

Gift Shop

The hospital has gift shops on the 1st and 5th floors, in the Giraffe and Whale zones. They sell gifts, jewelry, toys, cards, flowers, phone cards, stamps, candy, magazines, books, personal grooming items and mylar balloons.

Note! Latex balloons are not allowed in the hospital due to allergy and choking hazards.

Phone orders for patients are gladly accepted.

The Giraffe Gift Shop (1st floor) is open:

  • Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Whale Gift Shop (5th floor) is open:

  • Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Closed on weekends.

These hours vary with the seasons. Please call (206) 987-2238 for more information.

Visit the Gift Shop online. Purchase balloons, flowers or gift certificates and we will deliver them to patients, parents or siblings anywhere in the hospital.

Mail

A U.S. Postal Service drop box is located outside the Whale 6 entrance on the 6th floor. Stamps are available in the ATM machine near the cafeteria on the 5th floor and at the gift shops on the 1st and 5th floors.

Memorials and Plaques

The Recognition Corridors are located on the 5th floor by the Train and Giraffe elevators. Memorial names are on panels with white backgrounds, located by the Giraffe elevator. For more information, call the Foundation office at (206) 987-2153.

Pharmacies

Children’s two pharmacies fill prescriptions for children with appointments in our clinics, as well as for children on the inpatient units and in the Emergency Room. Please call the Whale pharmacy at (206) 987-2138 24 hours in advance for prompt refills.

Hours
8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday to Friday, and 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekends and holidays. Patients and families that are being discharged from the units or Day Surgery, clinic patients and Emergency Services patients should use the Whale Pharmacy during its open hours.

Phones

Pay phones with TTY access are located in the following areas:

  • 5th floor near the vending machines between the cafeteria and the staff only entrance
  • 1st floor near the Train elevators

In-house courtesy phones are located near each entrance. There is also a private room with a courtesy phone in the Family Resource Center (Train zone, 5th floor).

If you are calling from a hospital phone to another area of the hospital, dial “7” and the last four digits. If you are calling an outside number from a hospital phone, dial “9,” then the phone number.

If you are calling your child or another patient’s room from outside Children’s, call (206) 987-2000 and ask for the patient by name, not by room number. Calls are transferred from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The toll-free number, for business use only, is (866) 987-2000. Calls made to this number will not be transferred to patient rooms.

Public Restrooms

If your child is in a hospital room, please use the hospital’s public restrooms unless your child’s nurse says it is okay to use the bathroom in your child's room.

There are plenty of public restrooms at the hospital, including:

1st floor:

  • Giraffe entrance by conference rooms
  • Family restroom between Giraffe and Train elevators
  • Across from payphones between Giraffe and Train elevators

2nd floor: Giraffe elevators, across from unit coordinator’s desk on the Medical Unit

3rd floor:

  • Giraffe elevators, across from the unit coordinator’s desk on the Surgical Unit
  • Between Rocket elevators and Central Supply

4th floor:

  • Across from the Whale 4 greeter desk
  • Next to the Health Information Management department near the Airplane elevators

5th floor:

  • Across from the Family Resource Center office
  • Across from Balloon elevators
  • Across from the Whale 5 greeter desk

6th floor:

  • Across from the Balloon elevators
  • Across from the Whale 6 greeter desk
  • Across from the Airplane elevators

The following men’s restrooms have a baby changing station either on the wall or in the handicapped stall area:

4th Floor:

Please sign in at the Reception Center on the 4th floor near the Whale entrance prior to receiving Radiology services.

Ronald McDonald House

Families who live at least 60 miles from the hospital are eligible to stay at Ronald McDonald House. The facility is located blocks from Children’s hospital.

The hospital provides van service to and from the house to the hospital every two hours on the even hours, or by request. Please call Ronald McDonald House directly for information about their service.

Sibling Playroom

A free, supervised playroom for brothers and sisters is on the 4th floor in the Whale zone. Children ages 3 to 11 who are potty trained may stay for up to two hours at a time on a space-available basis. It is open 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Sleeping Areas

Medical and Surgical Inpatient Units: Each child may have one parent or legal guardian stay with him or her overnight.

If your child is in a single room in the Giraffe zone, both parents may stay overnight, unless your child’s medical condition does not allow this. In each room, either a sleeper chair or fold down couch is available.

Intensive Care Units: Sleeping rooms are available through the ICU unit coordinator. Some patient rooms may have a sleeper chair.

Inpatient Psychiatric Unit: Discuss options with your child’s nurse.

Smoking Area

Children's is a smoke-free campus, with the exception of one outdoor smoking shelter that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The shelter is located at the corner of the main hospital drive and the driveway to the Giraffe entrance.

For health and safety reasons, children and teens are not allowed in or near the smoking shelter. Smoking is not allowed in front of any hospital entrance or in parking areas at any time.

Stamps and Mailbox

You can purchase stamps in the gift shops on the 1st floor near the Giraffe entrance and on the 5th floor near the Sound Cafe. A U.S. Mail drop box is located outside the Whale 6 entrance on the 6th floor.

Volunteer Office

Professional hairstylists visit the hospital frequently and offer discounted cuts for family members. A $5 donation is requested. Call the Volunteer Office at (206) 987-3911 for an appointment.

Waiting Areas and Patios

All Children’s clinics and inpatient units have family waiting areas with TVs, magazines and a limited number of toys for children. In addition, the Family Resource Center has a large family lounge with comfortable sofas and chairs.

If you’re looking for a place to get some fresh air, explore one of Children’s outdoor patios. All of the following areas are smoke-free.
