Medimmune and PIDS Present Viral Respiratory Diseases Fellowship to Seattle Children's Hospital Pediatrician

The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS), on behalf of MedImmune, Inc., will present the first annual Viral Respiratory Diseases Fellowship to Angela Peck, M.D., of Seattle Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center.
The award, which includes a $45,000 per year grant for two years, was established to stimulate and support clinical research related to viral respiratory diseases. PIDS will present the award to Dr. Peck on May 1 at a dinner coinciding with the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies in San Francisco.
“We are very proud to continue our support of the medical research community by sponsoring the first PIDS fellowship,” said Frank Malinoski, M.D., vice president, medical affairs, infectious disease at MedImmune. “The recently created PIDS fellowship program will complement MedImmune’s pediatric fellowship program, which helps advance research and new discoveries in the area of pediatric infectious diseases.”
Dr. Peck’s research goal is to evaluate factors that influence the acquisition of respiratory virus infection and disease progression among immunocompromised children and adults to ultimately guide implementation of preventive and treatment strategies for viral respiratory illness. She is also one of six pediatric fellows to receive $35,000, as part of MedImmune’s $210,000 Pediatric Fellowship Program, which is designed to stimulate interest and research in the area of viral respiratory pathogens.
“My goal is to use the support of these generous awards to study parainfluenza virus infections in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation recipients,” said Dr. Peck. “I am honored by the vote of confidence these fellowship awards give to my potential to make a meaningful contribution to improve the health of this vulnerable patient population.”
Dr. Peck’s work is being conducted through the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance at Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and the University of Washington. She earned her medical degree at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee and completed her residency in pediatrics at the University of Washington in Seattle.
