Avoid Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

December 20, 2006

If you are trying to keep your family warm during a power outage, follow these tips to avoid accidental injury or death from carbon monoxide:

  • Do not use gasoline-powered machinery such as a generator indoors, including the garage.
  • Do not cook or heat with charcoal barbecues inside your home.
  • Do not warm up your vehicle by running the engine inside an attached, closed garage.

Carbon monoxide poisoning can kill you. Symptoms include splitting headache, nausea and vomiting, and fatigue. If you believe you have carbon monoxide poisoning, get fresh air right away. Call for medical help from a neighbor’s home.
