Independent Evolution of Bitter-Taste Sensitivity in Humans and Chimpanzees

The research of Children’s geneticist Michael Bamshad is featured as the cover story for the current issue of Nature. The research suggests that the ability to taste PTC (phenylthiocarbamide) and other bitter compounds evolved as a way to protect animals from eating poisonous plants.

Kids may be getting a media overdose

Children are tethered to technology as never before.

“We’ve technologized childhood in a way that’s truly remarkable,” said Dr. Dimitri Christakis, a pediatrician and director of the Child Health Institute at the University of Washington.

Children’s exposure to the media should be considered a public health issue, much like smoking or violence, Christakis argues in this month’s issue of the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, which focuses on children and the media.
