Program Overview

The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship program, which began in 1975, combines broad clinical training at a quaternary care hospital that receives referrals from five states. We have a reputation for success in preparing fellows for a career in research in pediatric infectious diseases. Most of our fellows successfully apply for funding, and the vast majority achieve faculty positions at major academic institutions upon completion of their fellowships.

Our fellows obtain inpatient clinical experience through the inpatient pediatric infectious diseases consult service, as well as outpatient and other clinical experiences, including pediatric infectious diseases, virology, immunology, microbiology practicum and a twice weekly clinical/research conference.

Fellows spend eight months of each year doing research. During the first year, fellows develop a project and learn the laboratory techniques required to complete it. In year two, they acquire data for publication, and in the third year they write a manuscript and obtain data for and write a research grant.

Fellows are free to pursue research with any principal investigator affiliated with the University of Washington. A wide range of research opportunities are available in the pathogenesis of viral, fungal, parasitic and bacterial diseases, including global health issues. Examples include pathogenesis of group B streptococcal infections, mechanisms of maternal-infant HIV transmission, and identification of potential targets for antimalarial drugs.

Board certification eligibility upon fellowship completion: Pediatric Infectious Disease

Length of fellowship: 3 years

Number of fellowships available: Up to 3
