Program Overview
The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship program was established in 1969. The first year is devoted to clinical training in pediatric hematology and oncology, consisting of two integrated but separate subprograms: general hematology/oncology and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). First year fellows take call from home approximately five to six times per month. The second and third years are primarily devoted to research training aimed at developing independent academic investigators. Fellows receive training and experience in both basic research and clinical research throughout the three years of training. Second and third year fellows attend continuity clinic one half-day per week; they take call from home three to four times a month during the second year and two times a month in the third year. Third year fellows serve one month on the transplant service.
Core rotations are divided among three sites of practice, as follows: Seattle Children’s (inpatient general hematology/oncology, inpatient HSCT, ambulatory care general hematology/oncology, and elective experience in pediatric pathology), Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (ambulatory care and long-term care following HSCT, elective experience in HLA-typing), University of Washington Medical Center (elective with experience in radiation oncology and laboratory medicine).
Each fellow has an individualized research program. The available programs at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington and Children’s represent a wide variety of research opportunities. One of the strengths of the research component of our program is the substantial interaction between the various research programs described. Research projects are tailored to meet the needs of individual fellows depending on their interests, previous training and experience.

Application Requirements
- Prerequisites/post–medical school requirements: Applicants must be in or have completed a three-year pediatric residency and must have passed USMLE Steps 1 and 2. Fellows who match to our program must complete a three year residency, must obtain a Washington state medical license and DEA certificate, must have passed USMLE Steps 1, 2 and 3, and must provide health/immunization documentation prior to starting their fellowship.
