Program Overview
The Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship program began in 1963 and has a strong tradition of providing a rich training experience designed to develop original thinkers and academic leaders in the field.
In the first year, fellows choose a research project, begin their clinical rotations, obtain certification in neonatal resuscitation, participate in an ongoing lecture series and begin participating in the High-Risk Infant Follow-up Clinic.
In year two, fellows continue their research and clinical rotations and coordinate one conference. Fellows typically present their research at local, regional or national conferences. We offer ideas for grant funding with an emphasis on long-term career planning.
In the third year, fellows continue or complete their research, continue clinical rotations, and take on administrative duties. They typically present and publish their research and are encouraged to pursue grant funding. If desired, a fourth year of fellowship can be mapped out for those who wish to remain in academics. Fellows attend follow-up clinic throughout their three years.
Clinical rotations include: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at University of Washington Medical Center and Seattle Children’s, pediatric surgery, perinatology, and cardiac intensive care. Research activities span the three-year fellowship.
The primary basic research opportunities within the division include studies of neurodevelopment and neuroprotection. We use multiple animal models, including those of neonatal stress and brain injury. Fellows may also participate in ongoing clinical studies.
Many of our fellows choose to combine a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree with their training. Our division supports the tuition and fees for both years of the MPH program.
