Program Overview
Established in 1975, the Developmental Behavioral Fellowship program has a long history of successfully producing leaders in developmental disabilities care, research and education. Our faculty members have a wide variety of interests and serve a diverse group of patients. Opportunities for collaboration with other internal and external fellowship programs allow our fellows to cross departmental and institutional lines to tailor a fellowship experience that best fits their interests.
In keeping with the longitudinal nature of this training experience, our fellows perform ongoing clinical activities throughout their three years with us. Clinical sites include the University of Washington Center for Human Development and Disability (CHDD), Seattle Children’s and Madigan Army Medical Center (MAMC). A key component of the first year of training is the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Program. Educational experiences and research methods are introduced in the first year as well. Fellows should expect to spend approximately half their time in clinical activities and the other half in research over the three-year training period.
A variety of clinical areas are covered in this fellowship. Clinical areas covered at CHDD include child development clinics, the Autism Center and child psychiatry. The areas covered at Seattle Children’s include spina bifida, spasticity management, cerebral palsy, craniofacial, autism, and Tourette clinics and inpatient experience. At MAMC, learning disorders, autism and behavior clinics are covered.
Research is a required component of the fellowship. There is a high degree of flexibility in the topic choice, from clinical outcomes studies to quality of life/care and basic research activities.
While not required for the fellowship, there are opportunities for fellows to pursue additional degrees and training within the University of Washington (e.g., School of Public Health and Community Medicine).
