Program Overview

Established in 1959, the University of Washington Allergy and Immunology (A&I) Fellowship program aims to provide the highest quality clinical and research training in order to equip residents with the skills they will need for a career in academic medicine.

The University of Washington (UW) is a major biomedical research institution, ranking first in the United States among public institutions (and second overall) in obtaining federal research funds. The School of Medicine has more than 1,200 (regular and research) full-time faculty members, including clinical and basic science departments.

A&I fellows perform direct patient care, research and scholarly activities, and other educational objectives as described in the program requirements for residency education in A&I. The Conjoint UW/A&I Fellowship Advisory Committee evaluates trainees' progress as they grow from novices to expert practitioners, attaining both the general and A&I-specific ACGME-defined competencies.

Major categories of clinical exposure include pediatric and adult asthma and allergy clinic, immunodeficiency clinic, clinical laboratory immunology, and research/clinic electives (e.g., otolaryngology, pulmonary and Pulmonary Function Lab, vocal cord dysfunction, dermatology, emergency medicine services, gastroenterology, HIV/infectious diseases, rheumatology and transplant immunology).

A&I residents are involved in basic and translational laboratory research and/or related scholarly activity. The first year of our program is devoted entirely to basic research with clinical activities qualifying for American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI) certification taking place in years 2 and 3 of the program. The University of Washington Allergy/Immunology fellows may choose among any relevant research laboratory throughout the UW system. For more information about the research faculty mentors participating in the Immunology research training, visit the UW Department of Immunology.

The UW A&I training program is funded by private funding agencies as well as institutional sources, and is based at UW-affiliated hospitals:
