Vascular Anomalies Clinic Offers Comprehensive Care

August 15, 2005

Over the past 25 years there have been significant changes in our understanding of vascular tumors and vascular malformations, otherwise known as vascular anomalies.

Three years ago a group of interested clinicians at Children’s agreed that a multidisciplinary team to coordinate care and improve management options for patients with these lesions was necessary.

Children’s offers a comprehensive approach to diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of vascular anomalies, both cutaneous vascular lesions, as well as deeper lesions within the soft tissue and bone.

Types of anomalies seen in the vascular anomalies clinic include:

  • Hemangiomas
  • Lymphatic malformations
  • Venous malformations
  • Other types of vascular tumors

Dr. Jonathan Perkins directs the vascular anomalies clinic. Ronna Smith, ARNP, coordinates care. Specialties included in the vascular anomalies clinic are otolaryngology, dermatology, general surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, facial and plastic reconstructive surgery and interventional radiology.

The vascular anomalies clinic meets twice monthly and has monthly interdisciplinary conferences where treatments for a variety of conditions are discussed. This development has enabled the significant coordination of care for multiple patients and improved treatment outcomes and access for patient care.
