Exceptional Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Services

July 18, 2005

As the leading pediatric specialty provider in the Pacific Northwest and a partner of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), Children’s offers a comprehensive approach to pediatric bone marrow and stem cell transplantation.

Whether treating cancerous conditions like leukemia, or non-cancerous conditions such as aplastic anemia, the Pediatric Clinical Hematopoietic Cell Transplant Service boasts sought after expertise, high survival rates and a unique long-term follow-up care program.

Among the reasons to refer children to our program are:

Outstanding Transplant Results

Through our collaboration with the SCCA — a nationally recognized cancer center and the largest bone marrow transplant center in the world — our program’s transplantation survival rates are extremely high.

The SCCA’s cancer program has an 80 percent survival rate compared to the national average of 75 percent.
Leading Experts

Program Director Dr. Jean Sanders trained under Dr. E. Donnall Thomas, who won the 1990 Nobel Prize for Medicine for his groundbreaking transplantation work. In turn, nearly every pediatric transplant physician in the United States has had training with or can be linked to Dr. Sanders.

Treatment of High-risk Patients

We offer transplants to patients whose disease has relapsed or who have other medical problems that do not permit a standard transplant.

Latest Therapies

Our program offers the latest therapies including mini-transplants and the I 131 monoclonal antibody therapy, which may be effective for patients who otherwise would not be eligible for a transplant.

Excellent Resources

Both Children’s and the SCCA offer extensive resources for patients and their families including support groups, classes for caregivers, pastoral care and additional resources for families from out-of-town.
