The Bulletin: January 2006

The Bulletin is a monthly newsletter for Children's and community providers.

Dermatology Clinic Update

We have recently received questions about the future of the Dermatology Clinic at Children’s and would like to provide you with the current status of the program. Dr. Robin Hornung and Monica Edenholm, PA-C, are currently accepting new patients.

Dr. Robert Sidbury will be leaving Children’s at the end of February to go to Boston. We are currently recruiting for Dr. Sidbury’s replacement and working on an interim plan to cover his position this spring.

If you have questions about the Dermatology program, contact Patty Hovik at (206) 987-3670.

Two New Clinics Open

Neurofibromatosis Clinic at Children’s in Seattle

Children’s now offers a Neurofibromatosis Clinic on the third Friday of each month. Dr. Stephanie Wallace, Genetics Division, leads the multispecialty clinic that includes Dawn Earl, ARNP, Genetic Counselor Darci Sternen and faculty from the Neurology, Neurosurgery and Ophthalmology divisions.

Please refer patients to the Neurofibromatosis Clinic through the usual process, by phone at (206) 987-2080 or fax at (206) 985-3121. Questions may be directed to Stephanie Wallace at (206) 987-3408.

Trauma Clinic in Bellevue

The Orthopedics program has expanded its services in Bellevue. Beginning Jan. 9, they will offer a Trauma Clinic all day on Tuesdays and Wednesday mornings. Dr. Kit Song and Jim Foulsham, PA-C, will staff the clinic.

To refer patients, call the central referral phone line at (206) 987-2080 or fax (206) 985-3121. For urgent cases, please call the clinic directly at (425) 454-4644.
Home Care Services Provides Continuity

Whether a patient requires a complex hospital discharge that includes home care or requires home care with no previous hospitalization, all will benefit using Children’s Home Care Services.

Their comprehensive services include:

  • Infusion therapies
  • Enteral / Nutrition therapies
  • Respiratory home medical equipment
  • Growth hormone therapy
  • Home visits by nurses and respiratory therapists
  • Consultation with home care pharmacists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and dietitians
  • On-call clinical consultation and delivery services available 24/7

For information about referring families for Home Care Services, call (425) 482-4000.

Medical Interpretation Available by Telephone

Families who speak a limited amount of English can now call a toll-free number and get connected to a Children’s operator who speaks their language.

At (866) 583-1527, a recorded message prompts families to choose their language. An interpreter connects with the family and calls the hospital operator for them. The operator then calls the person (patient or staff) the family wants to reach, while the interpreter stays on the line to assist with interpretation.

Since this line only connects non-English speaking callers and interpreters directly to the hospital operator, providers should continue using Telelanguage ((888) 295-4363) and the Language Line ((800) 874-9426) for telephonic interpretation.

Palliative Care for Families

A nationally recognized service at Children’s can provide support for any child, regardless of a family’s ability to pay, who is facing a potentially life-limiting condition. It is one of only a few hospital-based pediatric palliative care programs in the nation.

The Palliative Care Consulting Service addresses the physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs of seriously ill children and their families through consultation and facilitation of care-planning meetings. The team is hospital funded and supported by local and national foundations.

Dr. Ross Hays directs the consulting service, which includes a nurse manager, chaplain, social worker and program coordinator.
