Our Pediatric Pulmonary Fellowship, first offered in 1980, provides a breadth of clinical exposure at a large free-standing children’s hospital and is committed to intense research training that prepares graduates for an academic career. There are many potential mentors for research within the department. Our connection to the University of Washington also brings the unique opportunity to complete a master’s degree during fellowship training. We strive to create an environment that instills a passion to provide exemplary multidisciplinary care, the curiosity and skills to advance care through research, and the willingness to share knowledge via teaching.
The first year focus is on clinical training in inpatient pulmonary medicine, ICU, sleep medicine and flexible bronchoscopy. Trainees attend two half-day clinics per week when off inpatient service. Fellows participate in a physiology review group, journal club, and other clinical conferences. In the second year, the focus shifts to a basic or clinical research track. Fellows may select a bench laboratory mentor from within or outside of the division. For clinical research, fellows enroll in a master’s program for coursework and a thesis project. Fellows perform inpatient service and one half-day clinic per week. The third year is similar to the second, with increased independence in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Areas of clinical exposure include inpatient pulmonary medicine/consultation, pediatric ICU, cardiac ICU, pediatric sleep medicine and respiratory therapy/Pulmonary Function Lab. Outpatient clinics when off inpatient service, include flexible bronchoscopy, physiology review group and journal club. Second and third year fellows also participate in inpatient pulmonary medicine/consultations, outpatient clinics and flexible bronchoscopy.
Research is the major focus of the fellow’s second and third years. Trainees choose between a basic science and a clinical research track by the end of their first year. Those in the basic science track may choose a primary mentor within or outside of the division. Clinical research track fellows enroll in a master’s program at the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine. Major research areas include basic and clinical investigation related to cystic fibrosis, clinical/translational studies of the predictors of persistent wheezing in young children, asthma, primary ciliary dyskinesia, and scoliosis.
Board certification eligibility upon fellowship completion: Sub-board certification for Pediatric Pulmonology, Master of Science or Master of Public Health degree (clinical research track).
