Program Overview
The primary goals of the Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowship, first offered in 2000, are patient care, education and research. At the conclusion of the program, our fellows are able to operate independently on infants and children who manifest a broad range of neurosurgical problems, and they can competently handle complex critical care problems affecting neonates, infants and children.
Major areas of clinical exposure include patients with hydrocephalus, tethered cord, brain tumors, cerebral palsy, Chiari malformations and myelomeningocele, as well as general neurosurgery patients evaluated in the Birth Defects Clinic. This clinic is supervised by the staff neurosurgeon on a rotating basis. Primary care providers across the state refer patients to our Neurosurgery Department. New referrals and urgent cases account for more than 40% of patients seen in clinics. Many operative cases originate in the outpatient clinic.
Fellows have the opportunity to work with leaders in several fields of study. Due to tumor caseload and variety, the Children’s Neuro-Oncology Program was chosen to be part of the NIH Pediatric Consortium, one of the top nine programs in the country. The Myelomeningocele/Birth Defects Program is one of the more established programs in the hospital and is headed by Dr. David Shurtleff, a pediatric leader in this field for the past 40 years. Trauma experience at Children’s is augmented by trauma experience at Harborview Medical Center, a major referral center for neurological surgery, as well as the only Level I trauma center in the WWAMI region. Pediatric trauma patients requiring neurosurgical follow-up and rehabilitation are cared for at Children’s.

- Prerequisites/post–medical school requirements: Doctor of Medicine, completed chief residency in an approved neurosurgery program, current Washington state medical license
