Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship

Program Director

Patricia Fechner, MD

Program Overview

The Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship program at Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center benefits from an extremely large patient population, enabling physicians to see a variety of very rare endocrine disorders in addition to the more common problems. Established in 2005, the program is led by a large faculty with varied, complementary interests, providing a broad base of learning.

The first year is primarily clinical, with most time spent in outpatient and inpatient activities. During this year, each fellow chooses and begins a research project with either a clinical or basic science focus. In the second year, fellows continue with clinical work but spend more time on research. In the third year — in addition to clinical work — fellows are expected to take a more active role in teaching and supervision. During this final year, they complete and write up their research for publication.

Clinical exposure is provided in all aspects of pediatric endocrinology, including lipid metabolism and metabolic disorders and both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Some areas of research available to fellows include diabetes, lipid metabolism, obesity, growth, puberty and disorders of sex determination. Collaboration is available with adult endocrinologists, reproductive endocrinologists, geneticists and basic scientists. Other areas of research are available based on fellows’ interests.
