Adolescent and Young Adult Heart Program
The Adolescent and Young Adult Heart Program provides treatment and transition to adult care for teens and young adults who are 13 to 21 years old and have heart conditions.
What services do you offer?
We offer the same cardiology services that our regular Seattle Children's Heart Center does, tailored to teens and young adults. Whether your teen has had heart disease most of her life or is newly diagnosed, we cater to her unique needs.
If your child has lived most of her life with a heart condition, this clinic will help her transition to adult care. We assist teens and young adults in understanding their heart condition and required medications. We provide advice on the unique issues that face teens and young adults for school, jobs, exercise and health insurance.
The team also sees patients at the University of Washington Adult Congenital Heart Disease clinic, which helps smooth the transition to adult cardiology care.
If your teen is recently diagnosed or suspected to have a heart condition, we'll work closely with her on a wide range of services, including prevention, screening and the newest treatments for all kinds of heart and vascular (blood vessel) problems.
We also will screen for other medical problems that can affect the heart such as high cholesterol and sleep apnea.
What's special about the experience at Seattle Children's?
We are one of the few hospitals in the country that offers a service to help teens who have heart disease transition to adulthood. We work with the University of Washington Medical Center's program for adults with congenital heart disease.
Who's on the team?
Under the leadership of Dr. Karen Stout, the clinic brings together a team of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, interventional cardiologists, electrophysiologists, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, internists, obstetricians, radiologists, vascular surgeons, cardiac nurse practitioners and social workers to help prepare your teen to live a normal, productive life as an adult.
The University of Washington Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic has a similar team caring for adults with congenital heart disease.
