Preschool Swim Lessons

Seattle Children’s offers four levels of swim lesson classes at the therapy pool:

  • Parent and Child Swim Lessons: for children 6 months old through age 3.
  • Preschool Swim Lesson Level 1: for children around 4 to 5 years old who are beginner swimmers and need assistance in the water.
  • Preschool Swim Lesson Level 2: for children around 4 to 5 years old who are able to swim 3 yards without assistance.
  • Preschool Swim Lesson Level 3: for children around 4 to 5 years old who able to swim 5 yards without assistance on their front and back.

  • The American Red Cross Parent and Child Swim Lessons are for children between the ages of 6 months and about 3 years, and their parents. The purpose of the course is to make children comfortable with the water and teach them skills to prepare them for swimming in the future. In addition, we provide safety information and teach parents ways to help orient their children to the water.

    In this 25-minute class children will learn:

    • Learning to ask for permission before entering the water
    • Learning how to enter and exit the water safely
    • Feeling comfortable in the water
    • Practicing blowing bubbles
    • Putting their mouth, nose and eyes completely under water
    • Exploring floating on their front and back
    • Changing position in the water
    • Learning how to play safely in the water
    • Using combined arm and leg actions on their front and back with help
    • Wearing a U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jacket in the water

    In this 25-minute class parents will learn:

    • How to properly supervise children and maintain safe behavior in and around the water
    • How to enter and exit the water, with strict enforcement of the rule that a child must get an adult permission before entering any body of water
    • How and when to use holding and support techniques
    • How to determine your child’s readiness to try basic skills
    • Learning how to properly teach your child to go under water
    • How to use cues and the importance of being consistent in delivering cues
    • How to help your child learn and practice skills appropriate for their age and current developmental level and ability
    • How to play, and the importance of playing as a way to learn
    • Basic water safety information

  • The American Red Cross Preschool Swim Lesson Level 1 class helps young preschoolers become comfortable in the water and teaches basic water safety. Your child doesn't need any prior swim experience to take this class.

    In this 25-minute class, students will learn to:

    • Enter the water using the pool steps
    • Blow bubbles
    • Put their mouth, nose and eyes underwater
    • Front glide
    • Back glide
    • Roll over from front to back and back to front
    • Use arm and hand treading action
    • Alternate leg action on front and back
    • Alternate arm action on front and back
    • Use combined arm action on front and back

    This class is best for children 4 to 5 years old. It follows the American Red Cross Preschool Swim Lesson Level 1 curriculum.

  • The American Red Cross Preschool Swim Lesson Level 2 class builds on the skills learned in Preschool Swim Lesson Level 1 to help young preschoolers learn basic swimming skills.

    In this 25-minute class, students will learn to:

    • Enter the water using pool steps
    • Bob
    • Open their eyes under water and retrieve an object that's under water
    • Front float
    • Front glide
    • Back float
    • Back glide
    • Roll over from front to back and back to front
    • Tread water for 15 seconds
    • Use combined arm and leg action on front and back

    This class is best suited for children 4 to 5 years old. It follows the American Red Cross Preschool Swim Lesson Level 2 curriculum.

  • The American Red Cross Preschool Swim Lesson Level 3 class focuses on coordinating arm and leg movements and improves upon the skills learned in Preschool Swim Lesson Level 1 and Level 2.

    In this 25-minute class, students will learn to:

    • Entering water by jumping in
    • Bob
    • Go completely under water and hold their breath
    • Front float
    • Front glide
    • Back float
    • Back glide
    • Roll over from front to back and back to front
    • Tread water for 30 seconds
    • Use combined arm and leg action on front and back five body lengths

    This class is best for children 4 to 5 years old. It follows the American Red Cross Preschool Swim Lesson Level 3 curriculum.

Time and Cost

Classes are 25 minutes, once a week, for six weeks. Each six-week session is $90 per registered class. Classes will be pro-rated for hospital-recognized holidays.

Registration for each session will start one week before the start of the session.
