Newborn Hearing Screening
Lions Early Assessment Program (LEAP)
In late 1999, the Northwest Lions Foundation for Sight & Hearing established the Lions Early Assessment Program (LEAP) as a measure of its strong commitment to make newborn hearing screening a routine practice in our region.
LEAP joined forces with Children's Hospital & Regional Medical Center's Division of Pediatric Audiology in the spring of 2000, with the goal of achieving statewide implementation of universal newborn hearing screening, linked with appropriate follow-up, including diagnostic Audiology and early intervention, by the year 2004.
Individual grants to hospitals from the Northwest Lions Foundation, free technical assistance for hospitals in setting up their newborn screening programs, continuing education opportunities, development of training materials and community education materials, and building a network of Lion-based community support were all parts of this project.
