Meal Support Training for Parents

Meal Support Training for Parents

Do you have a child or adolescent with an eating disorder?

We can help you to learn the following skills: how to support your child or adolescent and their treatment; how to help manage tense mealtimes better; and how to improve your relationship with your child or adolescent. The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine offers a five-week class for parents of children and adolescents (ages 10 to 18) who have eating disorders. • Topics covered include: how to structure meal times and normalize your adolescent's eating habits; how to challenge the irrational thoughts (cognitive distortions) that occur with eating disorders; how eating disorders impact growth and development; and how to provide emotional support before, during and after meals. • The sessions are taught by a pediatric mental health specialist. For these classes to be effective, your child should be in treatment with a medical provider, nutritionist and/or mental health therapist.
