Asthma Power For Parents

This class is for parents and caregivers of children with asthma. Find out why all of your child's medicines are needed. Learn about asthma triggers, which inhalers work best and how to work with your child's school or day care.

This class is taught by nurse practitioners and pharmacists from Children's Hospital.

Autism 101

A 90-minute class for parents and caregivers of children recently diagnosed with autism who wish to better understand this disorder.

Autism 101 is taught by rotating faculty members from Children's Hospital and the University of Washington, along with some community professionals.

Each class includes time for questions.

Video/Teleconferencing

Are you from out of the area? Children's Hospital has a video and teleconferencing outreach program that serves Aberdeen, Anacortes, Colville, Kennewick, Longview, Mount Vernon, Olympia, Tacoma, Vancouver, Wenatchee and Yakima.

You can take part in the class from one of these sites on the same date. Please contact us for more information.

Autism 200 Series

A series of 90-minute classes for parents and caregivers of children with autism who wish to better understand this disorder. The lectures cover a variety of topics such as communication skills, behavioral skills, social skills, medication and legal aspects.

Classes are taught by rotating faculty members from Children's Hospital and the University of Washington, along with professionals from the community.

Each class includes time for questions. Please consider joining for us for as many sessions as you can!

Babysafe

This safety class is designed for new and expectant parents and others who care for babies. Babysafe is co-sponsored by Great Starts Birth & Family Education. Topics include infant development, baby safety, injury prevention and immediate care of common injuries. Infant CPR is demonstrated and practiced.

Infant and Child CPR

This CPR class is for parents, child-care providers and health care professionals. Topics include risk factors, healthy heart living, infant and child CPR and choking rescue techniques. The course is taught by registered nurses or medics, and is co-sponsored by Great Starts Birth & Family Education. Attendees receive an American Heart Association Basic Life Support certificate that is valid for two years.

Meal Support Training for Parents

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department at Children’s Hospital is sponsoring a
5-week class for parents of children aged 12 to 18 who have eating disorders.

Topics covered include:

  • How to structure meal times and normalize your child’s eating habits
  • How to challenge the distorted thought processes associated with eating disorders
  • How eating disorders affect growth and development during the adolescent years
  • How to provide emotional support before, during and after meals

The sessions are taught by Dave Hall, a pediatric mental health specialist. These classes are in addition to your child’s current treatment with a doctor, nutritionist and/or mental health therapist.

Potty Training

This class helps prepare parents and caregivers of toddlers (ages 12 to 30 months) for potty training your child. You will learn the physical, intellectual, psychological, emotional and social signs of readiness for your child to succeed at using the toilet. Also, learn tips such as what kind of potty chair is best, how to encourage your child and how to handle setbacks.

Please note: This class is designed for parents and caregivers only. Due to the size and length of the class, we do not feel the environment is appropriate for young children.
