Why Teens Have More Trouble Waking Up in Summer

Sixteen-year-old McKenzie Wilson knows what it's like to be tired all the time. "It was like a real struggle to like get out of bed or like wake up," she said. She slept 12-15 hours some nights and eventually was diagnosed with narcolepsy, which is rare in teens, but don't be surprised if your teen starts exhibiting similar behavior this time of year. "A lot of teenagers will have what we call make up sleep or even binge sleep right when school gets out," says Seattle Children's Dr. Maida Chen. She adds that there's probably no reason to be overly alarmed, but this behavior does raise some concerns.
