Eliminating exemptions for religious and personal beliefs would certainly increase vaccination rates, said Dr. Douglas S. Diekema with the Treuman Katz Center for Pediatric Bioethics at the Seattle Children's Research Institute. But the strategy risks a backlash against vaccination requirements. "A better approach," Diekema said, "is to eliminate all barriers to vaccination. It should be easier to get vaccinated than it is to choose not to get vaccinated."
